Results of Vascularized Rib Grafts in Complex Spinal Reconstruction

Background: The application of vascularized rib grafts in spine surgery has been limited to the treatment of kyphosis with anterior placement of the rib graft to facilitate anterior spine arthrodesis. The outcomes following use of vascularized rib grafts in complex spinal reconstruction have not been adequately evaluated. The purpose of this study was to determine the results, including the time to osseous union and complications, following anterior or posterior placement of pedicled vascularized rib grafts for complex spinal reconstruction.

Arthrodesis of the Knee with a Long Intramedullary Nail Following the Failure of a Total Knee Arthroplasty as the Result of Infection

Background: Knee arthrodesis can be an effective treatment option for relieving pain and restoring some function after the failure of a total knee arthroplasty as the result of infection. The purpose of the present study was to review the outcome of a staged approach for arthrodesis of the knee with a long intramedullary nail after the failure of a total knee arthroplasty as the result of infection.

Having debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in February, So Much So Fast will open in October in Boston and New York, as well as other cities across the country. Beginning with Stephen Heywood's ALS diagnosis at the age of 29, the documentary offers a window into the Heywood family's battle against ALS and the formation of ALS TDF.

Best known for their Academy award nominated film Troublesome Creek, directors Steve Ascher and Jeanne Jordan wanted to make a film about ALS after Jeanne's mother was diagnosed with ALS. "We had been looking for a way to express the jaw-dropping impossibility of ALS through film, and in 2000 we came across the Heywoods' story in the New Yorker," they say.

Shot over five years, the film also captures the beginnings of ALS TDF, a unique nonprofit biotechnology company founded by Stephen's brother James. Launched from the basement of the Heywood family's home in 2000, ALS TDF has grown into a $4 million ALS research center known for its unique processes and innovative approach to translational research. Ê "This film is perhaps the best expression of our people and passion," says Heywood. Background: Periprosthetic femoral fractures following total hip arthroplasty are becoming more prevalent. When a fracture occurs in a femur with substantial proximal bone deficiency, the surgical options for revision are limited. One option includes the use of a proximal femoral allograft.

Dowden has asked Fairman Studios to illustrate another cover for their publication, Contemporary Surgery. The upcoming November issue will feature an article describing the interdisciplinary diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding. Though surgery is the most definitive treatment for gastrointestinal bleed (GIB) the approach to diagnosis and treatment has become more interdisciplinary, resulting in improved outcomes. Many factors shape the interventions the clinician decides to utilize in the elucidation of the etiology of GI bleed. Among them are the suspected source and speed of hemorrhage. The goals of this article are to describe the interdisciplinary diagnosis of and treatment for GIB and to develop an algorithm for navigating different interventions offered by surgeons, radiologists and gastroenterologists.

The November issue of JAAPA will feature an article on Raynaud's disease, illustrated on the cover. Most common among women younger than 30 years, Raynaud's disease is an idiopathic, vasospastic disorder that affects an estimated 10% of the total US adult population. Lerner Publishing Group, an educational children's book publisher based in Minneapolis, Minnesota has commisioned Fairman Studios for a new five-book series called Microquests. Microquests is targeted at grades 3-5, and it will primarily be illustrated with microscopic photographs of cells. The books cover plant cells, animal cells, DNA, cell organization, and the immune system. Micrographs don't always show certain details very wellÑparticularly to an untrained observer. Thus the books will include illustrations of cells, organelles, tissues, and other specifics to fill in what micrographs can't show. Fairman Studios will provide approximately 55 full-color interior illustrations for this project, an average of 9 or 10 illustrations per book for four books, plus 17 illustrations for the title on DNA.

Surgical Technique: Early Results of a New Method of Treatment for Idiopathic Congenital Idiopathic Vertical Talus

Background: The treatment of idiopathic congenital vertical talus has traditionally consisted of manipulation and application of casts followed by extensive soft-tissue releases. However, this treatment is often followed by severe stiffness of the foot and other complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new method of manipulation and cast immobilization, based on principles used by Ponseti for the treatment of clubfoot deformity, followed by pinning of the talonavicular joint and percutaneous tenotomy of the Achilles tendon in patients with idiopathic congenital vertical talus.

Chemotaxis illustrations will be licensed for a manuscript entitled Vegetarian Sports Nutrition, authored by D. Enette Larson-Meyer, for publication by Human Kinetics in 2006.

Dowden has asked Fairman Studios to illustrate another cover for their publication, Contemporary Surgery. The upcoming October issue will feature an article on the management of male breast cancer. Breast cancer remains extremely prevalent worldwide; notably though male breast cancer represents only 1% of all identified cases. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2006, over 1,700 men will be diagnosed in the United States with breast cancer and that 460 of those diagnosed will die from the disease. Additionally, there are notable gender related differences in many aspects of breast cancer care. For example, male breast cancer tends to present at a more advanced stage than female breast cancer and in a more uniform anatomical distribution. Further, there are currently no accepted breast cancer screening guidelines for males. This and other factors are discussed in the article.

Seahorse Bisoscience is expanding and has requested their logo now be tailored to identify their new division: Seahorse Labware. Founded in 2000, Seahorse Bioscience is a venture backed, privately owned company. Seahorse designs and manufacture consumable sensors and custom injection molded Labware in their Innovative Microplate facility in Chicopee, Massachusetts.

Kyphon has requested illustrations for their bone tamp technology: Every year, 1.5 million fragility fractures occur in the U.S. Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) account for almost half this number, making osteoporosis a major health concern. Although fragility fractures can have a disastrous effect on quality of life, in terms of treatment options, the outlook for fracture treatment is bright. Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can reduce back pain, as well as restore vertebral body height and spinal alignment. Fairman Studios has recently illustrated soem of Kyphon's technology for this condition.

Fairman Studios is currently completing full-color neuroanatomy and neurophysiology illustrations for a module being created by Jespersen and Associates for Neuroscience Inc. These illustrations will also be used in Neuroscience's presentations. Fairman Studios has also completed new illustrations for Jespersen and Associates regarding urinary incontinence. These illustrations will be included in a module and will be published in an upcoming journal article.

Fairman Studios is currently completing full-color bronchus anatomy illustrations for Asthmatx Inc. Asthmatx, Inc. is focused on helping patients with asthma breathe easier. Asthmatx is developing an interventional medical device, called the Alair¨ System, for the bronchoscopic treatment of patients with moderate to severe asthma. Multiple clinical studies are underway to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this device in potentially improving the lives of patients with asthma. One of these studies, the Air2Trial is presently enrolling patients.

A new health publication is being created centering on young women's health. Digital Watercolor Wash Demo Jennifer will be going over one of her favorite illustration techniques: using "natural" virtual brushes to make your digital artwork exude a traditional look and feel. Jennifer will cover a "digital watercolor wash" technique which employs the same color theory used in traditional wtarecolor glazing techniques. She will show samples of work, cover the basic steps and give a demo using a sample sketch.

Replacement with Lesser Tuberosity Osteotomy and Repair Subscapularis Muscle Function and Structure After Total Shoulder

Background: Recent studies have suggested that tenotomy and repair of the subscapularis tendon carried out for anterior approaches to the shoulder can be followed by failure of the tendon repair and by changes resulting in permanent loss of subscapularis function. We hypothesized that release of the subscapularis with use of a superficial osteotomy of the lesser tuberosity followed by repair of the two opposing bone surfaces would lead to consistent bone-to-bone healing, which would be possible to monitor radiographically, and would lead to satisfactory clinical and structural outcomes.

"Sexuality: Perception and Performance Throughout History" is the American Urological Association's latest traveling exhibit. Sex is sex, right? It seems simple enough, whether the word brings to mind the image of two bodies copulating for the purposes of erotic stimulation, or the uncomplicated idea of procreation. Interestingly, the reasons for partaking in sex, who to have sex with, when to have it and whether or not to have it at all has been forever dictated. In any given time period, constraining forces of morals, religious beliefs and societal taboos intertwine to create a dominant perception on sex, and make it so that sex, can no longer be, just sex. This new exhibit discusses these issues, and Fairman Studios is currently creating the website, which is to be part of the existing William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History. The entire collection of the William P. Didusch Center is on line - it's almost as fascinating as seeing it in person! Associated with a Lateral Condylar Nonunion in Children Supracondylar Dome Osteotomy for Cubitus Valgus Deformity

Background: Open reduction, autogenous bone-grafting, and internal fixation for the treatment of established nonunion of the lateral condyle associated with a cubitus valgus deformity has a high rate of complications. As a consequence, we developed a new technique that includes in situ compression fixation of the lateral condylar nonunion and a dome-shaped supracondylar osteotomy of the distal aspect of the humerus through a single posterior incision.

Grey Healthcare has asked Fairman Studios to create didactic chylomicron biochemical illustrations. Aegerion's technology covers this area, specifically dealing with microsomal triglyceride transfer protein. microsomal triglyceride transfer protein, or MTP, plays an important step in the production and secretion of lipoproteins that are produced in the intestine (dietary lipids) and the liver: the two main sources for cholesterol and triglycerides in the body.Ê Therefore inhibition of this process hold promise as an avenue for reducing serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

Surgical Treatment of Fractures of the Greater Trochanter Associated with Osteolytic Lesions

Background: A fracture of the greater trochanter through an osteolytic lesion may occur as a late complication after total hip arthroplasty. The optimal treatment for this difficult complication remains controversial. We have treated this problem with internal fixation and allogeneic bone-grafting at the time of revision of a loose acetabular component.

Design 5 has asked Fairman Studios to create illustrations for a new biology textbook. This edition will include anatomical illustrations of mammalian antomy, using rabbits as the model.

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, or BPH, is an enlargement of the prostate gland, which may impede the flow of urine. BPH does not lead to prostate cancer, nor does it increase one's chances of developing prostate cancer. Fairman Studios has provided Grey Healthcare with illustrations that explain this condition.

The Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis for Glenohumeral Arthritis Associated with Severe Rotator Cuff

Background: Patients who have pain and dysfunction from glenohumeral arthritis associated with severe rotator cuff deficiency have few treatment options. The goal of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the short-term results of arthroplasty with use of the Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis in the management of this problem.

Fairman Studios has currently completed mouse dermis transplantation illustrations to explain the process of skin and hair transplantation currently under study at Intercytex. Intercytex is an emerging healthcare company developing and commercialising cell therapy products Êfor the woundcare and aesthetic medicine markets. George Washington Medical Center - Robotic Surgery

Cottage Health Heart requested heart illustrations for a magazine and annual report. These illustrations will depict a cross section of the heart showing atrial fibrillation using images of hearts with normal and abnormal electrical pathways or the modified Maze surgical procedure.

Fairman Studios has been called upon to produce surgical illustrations for a Urology mongraph written by Leonard Zinman. He will be presenting this procedure at the American Urological Association's 2006 Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Decision Assistant lists descriptions of selected medical conditions and procedures, and related healthcare quality measures, pertaining to the nervous system. A patient can learn about each condition and procedure and the measures available to compare hospital quality for each by clicking on that term. Patients can find out how hospitals they may be considering perform for these measures in the UCHC Hospital Comparison Reports. The quality measures described include Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQIs), which reflect the quality of care given for a given procedure or condition in each hospital, and Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs), which take into account adverse events that patients experience as a result of treatment for any condition at the given hospital.
