October 10 2006: So Much So Fast: Now Showing in Silver Spring, MD
Having debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in February, So Much So Fast
will open in October in Boston and New York, as well as other cities across the country.
Beginning with Stephen Heywood's ALS diagnosis at the age of 29, the documentary offers
a window into the Heywood family's battle against ALS and the formation of ALS TDF.
Best known for their Academy award nominated film Troublesome Creek, directors
Steve Ascher and Jeanne Jordan wanted to make a film about ALS after Jeanne's
mother was diagnosed with ALS. "We had been looking for a way to express the jaw-dropping
impossibility of ALS through film, and in 2000 we came across the Heywoods' story in the New Yorker," they say.
Shot over five years, the film also captures the beginnings of ALS TDF,
a unique nonprofit biotechnology company founded by Stephen's brother James.
Launched from the basement of the Heywood family's home in 2000,
ALS TDF has grown into a $4 million ALS research center known for its unique
processes and innovative approach to translational research.
Ê
"This film is perhaps the best expression of our people and passion," says Heywood.
Ê
One of the most powerful aspects of filmmaking is the ability to capture the passage
of time and reveal how real life plays out, say Steve and Jeanne. "We look for the layers
of meaning in big moments and every day events." (Scientific Illustrations: Jennifer Fairman)

September 30 2006: Gastrointestinal Bleeding feature article to be illustrated on the November cover of Contemporary Surgery.
Dowden has asked Fairman Studios to illustrate another cover for their publication,
Contemporary Surgery.
The upcoming November issue will
feature an article describing the interdisciplinary diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Though surgery is the most definitive treatment for gastrointestinal bleed (GIB) the approach to
diagnosis and treatment has become more interdisciplinary, resulting in improved outcomes. Many
factors shape the interventions the clinician decides to utilize in the elucidation of the etiology
of GI bleed. Among them are the suspected source and speed of hemorrhage.
The goals of this article are to describe the interdisciplinary diagnosis of and
treatment for GIB and to develop an algorithm for navigating different interventions
offered by surgeons, radiologists and gastroenterologists.

2006 GNSI Conference and Annual Meeting - University of Wisconsin - Madison, Wisconsin
The name conjures up images of cheese curds, beer, and the Green Bay Packers. Wisconsin is also a state of amazing
geological diversity, natural beauty, friendly people and great learning institutions. Madison is a quirky, multi-cultural
gem that is tightly intertwined with the University of Wisconsin. There are numerous restaurants, galleries, and museums.
Hosting this year's conference is the University of Wisconsin Department of Geology, located in the Lewis G. Weeks Hall
for Geological Science. A theme that has emerged is The Passage of Time. Although it is sponsored by Geology,
the conference will not be
limited to the exploration of time to a strictly geological sense. All of us capture an object in time -
whether it is a flower that we draw before it fades, a fossil from many years past, or conceptual art for a future event.
We are influenced by time - overnight deadlines, months before the paycheck arrivesƒ you get the idea!
We are also short on time to just draw for fun. We'll keep that idea simmering in the background throughout the week.

June 21 2006: The Associated Press: Stem Cell Cocktail Helps Repair Paralysis
Johns Hopkins University neurologist Doctor Douglas Kerr says scientists have done "something that people have been trying to do for at least 30 years" -- regrow nerves that are needed to move a muscle.
Monday's issue of the journal Annals of Neurology reports scientists used stem cells and a host of nerve-friendly chemicals to help partially paralyzed rats walk.
Experts say it'll take years of research before the feat can be attempted in people.
The lead researcher, Dr. Kerr, says it's "a first step" that proves "you can rewire part of the nervous system."
He says the experiment should also temper expectations because it took a complex recipe of other chemicals to coax stem cells to form correctly.

Replacement with Lesser Tuberosity Osteotomy and Repair Subscapularis Muscle Function and Structure
After Total Shoulder
BY Christian Gerber, Edward H. Yian, Christian A.W. Pfirrmann, Matthias A. Zumstein and Clement M.L. Werner
Investigation performed at Balgrist Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland
Background: Recent studies have suggested that tenotomy and repair of the subscapularis
tendon carried out for anterior approaches to the shoulder can be followed by failure of the tendon
repair and by changes resulting in permanent loss of subscapularis function. We hypothesized that
release of the subscapularis with use of a superficial osteotomy of the lesser tuberosity followed
by repair of the two opposing bone surfaces would lead to consistent bone-to-bone healing, which would
be possible to monitor radiographically, and would lead to satisfactory clinical and structural outcomes.

June 2 2006: Sexuality: Perception and Performance Throughout History
"Sexuality: Perception and Performance Throughout History" is the American Urological Association's latest traveling exhibit.
Sex is sex, right? It seems simple enough, whether the word brings
to mind the image of two bodies copulating for the purposes of
erotic stimulation, or the uncomplicated idea of procreation. Interestingly,
the reasons for partaking in sex, who to have sex with, when to have it and
whether or not to have it at all has been forever dictated. In any given time
period, constraining forces of morals, religious beliefs and societal taboos
intertwine to create a dominant perception on sex, and make it so that sex,
can no longer be, just sex. This new exhibit discusses these issues, and Fairman Studios is currently creating the website,
which is to be part of the existing William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History.
The entire collection of the William P.
Didusch Center is on line - it's almost as
fascinating as seeing it in person! See current
and future exhibits, search the AUA collection of
scopes, books, illustrations, equipment or read
about the medical milestones in urology. This
new site will captivate "history buffs" and those
just entering the field of urology. |

Valgus Deformity
BY Yin-Chun Tien, Jian-Chih Chen, Yin-Chih Fu, Tsai-Tung Chih, Peng-Ju Hunag and Gwo-Jaw Wang
Investigation performed at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kaohsiung Medical College, Kaohsiung
City, Taiwan, Republic of China
Background: Open reduction, autogenous bone-grafting, and internal fixation
for the treatment of established nonunion of the lateral condyle associated with a cubitus
valgus deformity has a high rate of complications. As a consequence, we developed a new
technique that includes in situ compression fixation of the lateral condylar nonunion and
a dome-shaped supracondylar osteotomy of the distal aspect of the humerus through a single posterior incision.

HIF-1 Illustration created for Johns Hopkins research, featured in March 2006 issue of Cell Metabolism.
A critical aspect of metabolic adaptation to hypoxia is the activation of glycolytic enzyme genes by HIF-1, which results in increased conversion of glucose to
pyruvate and then lactate. On pages 177-185 and 187-197 of this issue, Kim et al. and Papandreou et al., respectively, demonstrate that HIF-1 also actively
suppresses mitochondrial function by directly transactivating the gene encoding pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1). PDK1 inactivates the TCA cycle enzyme,
pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH), which converts pyruvate to acetyl-CoA. The cover depicts HIF-1 regulation of mitochondrial function.

January 6 2006: Fairman Studios assists UCompare Healthcare with didactic patient education illustration.
UComparehealthCare (UCHC) helps people make better decisions about their healthcare choices. Their free reports help patients find,
research and compare hospitals, nursing homes and doctors. They also provide products and services for businesses, insurers,
healthcare providers and hospitals. UCHC provides dynamic Web-based interactive tools to consumers, businesses, insurers,
healthcare providers, and hospitals allowing them to measure the quality of healthcare services available. It is not their goal
to "rate" or "grade" physicians, hospitals, and nursing homes. Instead, we allow the user to select information based on personal
and specific interests, then we present the data in a visually descriptive manner
through annotated charts and graphs for ease of interpretation. Fairman Studios has added to their Decision Assistant tool by providing medical illustrations that guide patients
within various disease areas. The Decision Assistant lists descriptions of selected medical conditions and procedures,
and related healthcare quality measures, pertaining to the nervous system. A patient can learn about each condition and procedure
and the measures available to compare hospital quality for each by clicking on that term. Patients can find out how hospitals they
may be considering perform for these measures in the UCHC Hospital Comparison Reports.
The quality measures described include Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQIs), which reflect the quality of care given
for a given procedure or condition in each hospital, and Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs), which take into
account adverse events that patients experience as a result of treatment for any condition at the given hospital.
