Description: Cover illustration for the feature article, "MCTD: Recognizing and Treating It's Many Developments," in the January 2002 Issue of Women's Health in Clinical Practice. The figure shows the early features of mixed connective tissue disease which often involves the hands. This includes Raynaud's phenomenon, with characteristic ischemia of the fingers and severe pallor; swollen fingers, with or without hand edema; arthritis and athralgia; myositis; and synovitis. Localized sclerodactyly, and calcinosis cutis can also occur. Severe disease may cause ulnar deviation as well as marginal, arthritic erosions.
