October 4, 2007: Medical Illustration: The Art of Communicating Science presented at MICA3pm Brown 320: The JHU Medical Illustration program brought to the Maryland Institute of Art campus Jennifer Fairman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at John Hopkins University, School of Medicine. This program was a tremendous success! More than 78 students attended this session to learn about how art meets science in this fascinating career path. Jennifer Fairman gave a detailed talk about her process of becoming a medical illustrator and how she pursued science and art while an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland at College Park. Jennifer’s talk revealed the many areas where medical illustration is utilized from “web sites, annual reports, surgical and science textbooks, advertisements, medical journals, anatomical charts, and patient education materials.” Students who are interested to learn more about this career path, can stop by career development at 1210 Mount Royal for program information sheets. Jennifer will demonstrate why and how FileMaker can help a small illustration studio business owner can get more organized with computer-aided demonstration. Topics covered will include how to set up a basic database, and database types/features including client /contact management systems, job management, and building a database to archive stock artwork for easy reteival. August 7 – 13 2005: 2005 GNSI Conference and Annual Meeting – Bar Harbor, Maine The meeting will be held at the College of the Atlantic, near Acadia National Park. Herring gulls and fog, and tidal pools; mountain climbs and whale watching, a clam bake for a banquet and a barbecue. Mount Desert Island (reachable by causeway) where Bar Harbor is located, is the East Coast answer to Eden. The home of the only National Park in the northeast, it boasts rocky coast, pine-covered hikable mountains, America’s only natural fjord, a museum celebrating the art of bird carving and the charms of New England Yankee hospitality. The College of the Atlantic is where we will stay and they think we’re a great fit with their ecology oriented program. We will be the only group on this small campus then, and will have full run of the facilities. The college is situated slightly outside of the town of Bar Harbor (a fifteen minute walk) along the shoreline. Fairman Studios will be participating in the following presentations:

Thursday, July 8, 2004: “Setting Up Shop” Half-Day Workshop at 2004 GNSI Conference and Annual Meeting in Williamsburg, VASetting up Shop! Jennifer Fairman of Fairman Studios has recently been invited by the GNSI to give a half day workshop and lead an open discussion on how to set up a studio business at the 2004 Annual meeting.This four-hour presentation and open discussion will focus on how to set up a small business from a freelance scientific illustrator’s perspective. Jennifer will also demonstrate time-saving software for accounting, organizational and archival purposes using QuickBooks Pro and FileMaker Pro. Topics will include: finances, taxes and finding an accountant, organizing, incorporating, budgeting, pricing and much more. The second part of the workshop will include demos of (1) accounting software for free-lancers (QuickBooks Pro), (2) a client-tracking system and (3) an illustration archive database (using FileMaker Pro). This demo session will be 1 hour. Attendees will be able to interact with the session’s presenter and be given the chance to try using the databases and software being demonstrated at the end of the concurrent session. Questions and/or comments from attendees will be welcomed at the end of each of the presentations. In addition, contact information will be made available to attendees for after-meeting follow-up.
